Small Business, Your OlyFed

24 Hours with Casey Kilborn, OlyFed VP & Director of Business Development

We all daydream of bigger and better. But some folks put in the extra steps, extra hours and extraordinary hard work to actually make those hopes a reality. At Olympia Federal Savings, VP and Director of Business Development Casey Kilborn is one of those driven individuals, working almost around the clock to make dreams come true.

Over the last decade, Kilborn worked his way up from branch manager to his current position. He did it all to build lifelong relationships with colleagues, local businesses and families across the community. As expected, Kilborn’s days start early and run long, but he loves every minute of it.

6:00 a.m.

The alarm goes off with a message that Kilborn often uses, “Be Great.” And with that, like many of us, mornings start with walking the dog and packing school lunches for the kids all while play Taylor Swift music through the house to get everyone moving. Kilborn gets his middle school girls out the door, then preps for a full calendar of events.

8:00 a.m.

In his management role, Kilborn regularly travels between branches. Today, he’s kicking things off at OlyFed’s Lacey branch. Each location starts the day with a team huddle. “Sometimes they’re a fun game, sharing shoutouts for one another or discussing products or services,” says Kilborn. “Today I’m leading a huddle about our new affinity debit cards and explaining how the most important shop local decision people can make is to bank local.”

OlyFedders have been out in the community spreading the word about this new program and sharing how an OlyFed Affinity Card gives back to local schools, Kilborn explains. “So not only do you get a really cool card design to show your school pride, but every time you use your card, it’ll generate two cents toward your school’s foundation or ASB Fund, no cost to you. Current OlyFed customers can upgrade their debit card to an affinity card of their choice. OlyFed has cards for every high school in Thurston County along with Saint Martin’s University and South Puget Sound Community College.”

10:00 a.m.

Now it’s time for a meeting about the Affordable Home Loan Program with Mortgage Loan Officer Manager, Melissa Kirkeby. In the first half of this fiscal year, OlyFed closed 26 affordable home loans, which are designed for households who earn 80% or less of area median income. “We are really proud to be able to offer this program and have created incredible partnerships with those in our community like South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity who share our vision of making homeownership achievable for our neighbors,” says Kilborn.

Kirkeby shares a recent success story about a fixed-income customer whose rent increases ate up a large majority of that money. This customer just closed on her first home with the help of OlyFed’s Affordable Loan Program and Habitat for Humanity and her mortgage is now less than her rent.

11:00 a.m.

Now, Kilborn and his team help a new business client get set up with Automated Clearing House (ACH) payroll and financial services and Positive Pay fraud monitoring. OlyFed understands how important it is to streamline the day as every interaction is vitally important.

“Need help figuring out ACH to make it easy to pay your monthly expenses or collect from your customers? We’ve got a solution,” says Kilborn. “No time to get to the bank? Although we love seeing our customers’ smiling faces, we know entrepreneurs are busy so we can get them set up with remote deposit capture.”

12:30 p.m.

Today’s lunch hour is spent volunteering for the Washington Middle School student store. Kilborn finds this experience especially fulfilling as both he and his daughters are proud Bulldogs. “It’s the little things that matter and OlyFed truly understands that,” says Kilborn. “I’m so grateful that I work for an organization that provides our employees time to volunteer in the community. From our individual and collective volunteer activity and our community giving, to the care our staff takes with each interaction, you experience the difference when you work with a local, community bank.”

2:00 p.m.

After lunch, Kilborn has his weekly check-in with business loan officer Scott Gunther. At OlyFed, business loan decisions are made right here by people who understand the local economy in ways big banks might not get, explains Kilborn.

5:00 p.m.

Instead of heading straight home tonight, there is an account opening event for students at Capital High School. OlyFed partners with many Thurston County schools “to provide financial education and help young people in our area have a strong and sound financial future,” says Kilborn. “Events like this bring the bank right to students and their parents and guardians. Our team of bankers is onsite to answer questions and to help students gain insights into budgeting and saving and learn the importance of compounding interest and investing at an early age.” One key product they offer—which families can open on the spot—are Student Saver CDs. Families can also learn more about their school’s OlyFed Affinity Card partnership.

7:00 p.m.

After Capital High School’s event, Kilborn picks up his daughters from cheer practice and they head home for family dinner and some much-needed time to relax and watch a movie together.

The next time you see Casey out, be sure to ask him about his favorite concert.
